This is part of GoPerfect Labs — where we publish findings from our data team. We analyze outreach sequences and conversion data across our platform, then share what the data shows.

We analyzed 890,000 outreach sequences across LinkedIn, email, and SMS — comparing single-channel approaches against multi-channel sequences for the same candidate profiles and role types. We tracked reply rates, positive response rates, and interview conversion at every step.

The data on channel mixing is more definitive than we expected.

Why candidates respond to channel variety

Passive candidates aren't avoiding your outreach — most of them just don't live in one inbox. A senior engineer might check LinkedIn twice a week, keep email for work, and be unusually responsive to SMS because it's unexpected. A sales leader might ignore InMail religiously but respond to a well-timed email during their commute.

Single-channel sourcing assumes you know which inbox a candidate prefers. You don't. Multi-channel sequencing lets the candidate respond on their terms — and the reply rate difference is dramatic.

The highest-converting sequence we found

Across all the data, one sequence structure consistently produced the best results: a LinkedIn InMail first touch, followed by an email on day 5, followed by a short LinkedIn connection note (no body message) on day 10. Here's what makes each step work.

The channel + timing interaction nobody talks about

Channel choice and timing interact in ways that aren't obvious. Our data found that the effectiveness of the channel switch is heavily dependent on the gap between touches.

Following up the same day as the InMail looks like desperation. Waiting 10 days means the candidate has forgotten you. 4–5 days is the sweet spot — long enough to feel like independent outreach, short enough that the LinkedIn touch is still in their recent memory.

"Multi-channel isn't about being everywhere. It's about meeting the candidate where they happen to be paying attention that week."
